Who Is Jesus, Really?

For the one who grew up hearing His name — in church, in hymns, at a grandmother's knee — and who is now tired, busy, and still wondering who He really is.

Picture a man of 52. Let us call him Jean-Robert — not a real person, but a portrait of many. He grew up in Haiti, in his grandmother's house, where the name of Jesus was everywhere: in the morning prayer, in the hymns on Sabbath, in the blessing she spoke over him at the door. Today he lives in Boston. He works two jobs, sends money home, and worries about his aging father. One evening, his teenage daughter looked up from her phone and asked, "Papa, who is Jesus to you?" He opened his mouth — and nothing came. He knew the songs. He knew the stories. But in that moment he realized: he knew a lot about Jesus, yet he had never really known Him.

Maybe you know that silence. You have heard about Jesus all your life. But between the bills, the children, the parents getting older and the long days, He has become a name more than a Person. So let us ask the question honestly: who is Jesus, really?

Jesus Himself asked it first. People had many opinions about Him — a prophet, a teacher, a good man. Then He turned to His own friends:

"He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God."Matthew 16:15-16

Opinions about Jesus are everywhere. But His question is personal: "whom say ye that I am?" Not your grandmother, not your pastor — you. And the best place to hear the answer is the Bible itself.

First, Jesus did not begin in Bethlehem. John opens his Gospel before the manger, before the world:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made."John 1:1-3

Jesus is the eternal Son, one with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Paul writes that "all things were created by him, and for him," and that "by him all things consist" (Colossians 1:16-17). He holds everything together — even on the days you feel you are falling apart. Jesus said it Himself: "Before Abraham was, I am" (John 8:58).

Second, this eternal God became one of us.

"And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."John 1:14

He did not love us from a distance. He "took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men" (Philippians 2:7). He had a mother. He worked with His hands. He knew hunger, tiredness and the pressure of family expectations. Seventh-day Adventists believe, with the Bible, that Jesus is fully God and fully human. That means He understands you:

"For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin."Hebrews 4:15

The tired worker, the worried parent, the son far from his father — Jesus is a stranger to none of it.

Third, He came for a reason. Before He was born, the angel said that "he shall save his people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). Jesus explained His own mission: "For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost" (Luke 19:10). Centuries earlier, Isaiah had seen it:

"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."Isaiah 53:5

In The Desire of Ages (chapter 1, "God With Us", p. 25), Ellen G. White put it simply: "Christ was treated as we deserve, that we might be treated as He deserves." That is how much "God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son" (John 3:16). And the story did not end at the tomb. On the first day of the week, the women heard these words at the empty grave:

"He is not here, but is risen"Luke 24:6

Fourth, He is the way home. Jesus did not present Himself as one good road among many. He said:

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."John 14:6

This is not said to look down on anyone. It is an invitation: the door to the Father is open, and that door has a name. When Thomas, the one who doubted, finally saw the risen Jesus, he did not call Him a good teacher. He said: "My Lord and my God" (John 20:28).

Fifth, He has not changed — and He has not stopped looking for you. "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever" (Hebrews 13:8). The Jesus your grandmother prayed to is the same Jesus who knows your name tonight. And He is not waiting for you to clean up your life first: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Listen:

"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me."Revelation 3:20

Knowing about Jesus is not the same as knowing Him. Jesus prayed: "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent" (John 17:3). Not only knowing facts — knowing a Person.

Knowing about Jesus fills your head. Knowing Jesus fills your life.

So Jean-Robert — and you — do not need a perfect speech. You can start tonight with a simple prayer: "Jesus, I have heard about You all my life. Now I want to know You." Open the Gospel of John and read one chapter a day. The next time someone you love asks, "Who is Jesus to you?", you may not have every answer — but you will have a story of your own.

One question before you go

Dear friend, if you have heard about Jesus all your life but feel far from Him — tired, busy, carrying your family on your shoulders — hear this: He is the same Jesus, and He is knocking at your door today. Would you like to know more about Jesus? Would you like to study the Bible with someone who will listen and pray with you, without judging you? You do not have to search for Him alone.
