Why Taking Care of Your Body Matters to God

For the mother, father, or caregiver who looks after everyone — and somehow never gets around to looking after themselves.

Picture a woman of 54. Let us call her Lucy — not a real person, but a portrait of many. She works full days, cooks for three children, and drives across town every evening to care for her aging mother. Her own checkup was postponed twice. When she finally went, the doctor looked at her numbers and said gently, "Lucy, we need to start taking care of you now." She held it together until she reached the parking lot. Then she sat in her car and cried. Two questions kept circling in her mind: "How did I let this happen?" And a quieter one she was afraid to say out loud: "Is God disappointed in me? Was my faith too weak?"

Maybe you know that parking lot. Maybe you are the one who remembers everyone's appointments except your own. So let us ask honestly: does God really care about my body? And if He does, is this one more thing I am failing at?

"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Many of us have heard this verse used like a finger pointing at us. But read it slowly. Before it says anything about what we should do, it says something about who we are. Your body is a temple — a place where God chooses to live. And you were "bought with a price." The price was not small. It was Jesus Himself, His life given on the cross. You do not care for a temple to make God love you. You care for it because He already does.

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service."Romans 12:1

Notice the order: "by the mercies of God" comes first. Mercy first, then response. Taking care of your body is not how you earn grace. It is one way of saying "thank You" to the One who has already given you everything.

And God's heart toward your health is warm, not harsh. The apostle John wrote to his friend Gaius:

"Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth."3 John 1:2

That is the tone of heaven toward you: "Beloved." God wants you well — body and soul together.

Now, Lucy's quiet question. Is illness a sign of weak faith? When the disciples saw a man born blind, they asked whose sin had caused it. Jesus answered, "Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him" (John 9:3). A diagnosis is not a verdict on your faith. Faithful people get sick. Faithful people take medicine, see doctors, and keep trusting God through it all.

You are not a project God is disappointed in. You are a person He bought, loves, and walks beside — one small step at a time.

So what does caring for this temple look like? The Bible gives us a picture in a young man named Daniel. Taken far from home to Babylon, he was offered the king's rich food and wine. "But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself" (Daniel 1:8). He did not rebel or make a scene. He asked respectfully, and he suggested a simple test:

"Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink."Daniel 1:12

The official agreed. At the end of ten days, Daniel and his friends looked healthier than the others (Daniel 1:15). But the Bible is careful to say where their wisdom came from: "As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom" (Daniel 1:17). Not a menu — God. Daniel's part was a faithful choice. God's part was the blessing.

Your choices can be just as small and just as faithful. One more glass of water. Going to bed a little earlier — "for so he giveth his beloved sleep" (Psalm 127:2). A short walk, or whatever movement your body can do today. Fruits, vegetables, grains and whole foods, close to the good things God gave at the beginning (Genesis 1:29). Fresh air and a few minutes of sunlight. Saying no to tobacco, alcohol and drugs. Keeping the appointments, taking the medicine your doctor prescribes, and asking for help. And Sabbath — a whole day each week when you are allowed to stop. Jesus once told His tired disciples, "Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while" (Mark 6:31).

Even eating and drinking can become worship: "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). Not perfectly. Faithfully.

In The Ministry of Healing, chapter "Natural Remedies" (p. 127), Ellen G. White wrote: "Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness, rest, exercise, proper diet, the use of water, trust in divine power—these are the true remedies." ("Abstemiousness" means moderation and self-control.) Notice the last one: trust in divine power. You are not carrying this alone.

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."Matthew 11:28

One question before you go

Dear friend, if you have spent years caring for everyone but yourself — if a new diagnosis or old guilt is sitting heavy on your heart — hear this: you were bought with a price, and you are loved. Would you like to learn more about Jesus? Would you like to study the Bible with someone who will listen without judging you? You do not have to carry this alone.

I have to take care of my body to earn God's love.We respond "by the mercies of God" (Romans 12:1); we "are bought with a price" (1 Corinthians 6:20) — His love comes first.
If I am sick, my faith must be weak."Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him" (John 9:3).
Only my soul matters to God, not my body."Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you" (1 Corinthians 6:19).
God does not care about my health."Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health" (3 John 1:2).
Rest is laziness.Jesus told His disciples, "Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while" (Mark 6:31).
A good caregiver never stops to care for themselves."Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28).
Sleep is wasted time."For so he giveth his beloved sleep" (Psalm 127:2).
What I eat and drink has nothing to do with my faith."Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31).
Daniel's vegetables made him wise."God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom" (Daniel 1:17).
Only a strong, healthy-looking body is precious to God."I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works" (Psalm 139:14).
