Is Jesus Really Coming Back?
Jesus made a promise — and Jesus always keeps His promises
Let's imagine a make-believe story. Maya is seven. Her grandpa had to move far away to fix up a big house with a garden for the whole family. Before he left, he knelt down, held her hands, and said, "I'm going to get a room ready just for you. And when it's ready, I will come back and take you there myself." Every evening, Maya looked out the window. One day her cousin said, "Maybe Grandpa forgot." Maya shook her head. "No. Grandpa always keeps his promises." She drew pictures of the house. She kept her shoes by the door. And one sunny morning — honk, honk! — there was Grandpa, arms wide open! Maya is not a real girl. But her story is a tiny picture of a real promise Jesus made to you.
Before Jesus went back to heaven, His friends were sad. So Jesus told them something wonderful. He said He was going to His Father's house to get a place ready for them — and then He would come back to get them.
Then one day, Jesus' friends watched Him go up, up, up into the sky, until a cloud hid Him. They kept staring at the sky. Suddenly two angels in white stood next to them and said: don't worry — this same Jesus will come back, just the way you saw Him go!
How will Jesus come back? Not in secret! It won't be hidden in one little corner of the world. The Bible says it will be like lightning that shines across the whole sky (Matthew 24:27). Everyone, everywhere, will see Him coming in the clouds with great glory (Matthew 24:30).
And it won't be quiet, either! There will be a big shout and the sound of God's trumpet. Then something beautiful happens. People who loved Jesus and have died are like they are sleeping (John 11:11-14). When Jesus comes, they will wake up first! Then all of God's children — the ones who woke up and the ones still living — will go up together to meet Jesus. Families who miss someone will hug again.
When will it happen? Here is a secret that even the angels don't know: nobody knows the day! If someone ever says, "I know the exact day Jesus is coming," they are mistaken. Jesus said only the Father knows.
So how do we get ready? Like Maya with her shoes by the door! We get ready by loving Jesus today, talking to Him, and trusting Him. We don't have to be perfect to be ready — Jesus is the one who saves us, as a gift. The Bible calls His coming "that blessed hope." That means it is a happy hope, not a scary one!
And then? Jesus will take us home. No more owies. No more goodbyes. No more crying.
Jesus promised to come back for me — and Jesus always keeps His promises!
Ellen G. White wrote about that day in her book The Great Controversy (chapter 40, "God's People Delivered," p. 640). Here is what she describes, in our own words: first, a small dark cloud appears in the east, about half the size of a man's hand. It comes closer and closer, and gets brighter and brighter, until it is a great white cloud shining with glory — with the rainbow of God's promise above it. That cloud is all around Jesus, coming to get His children!

Take-home sheet
- Jesus promised: "I will come again." Jesus always keeps His promises.
- He will come back in the clouds, and everyone will see Him — it won't be a secret.
- Nobody knows the day, not even the angels. I get ready by loving and trusting Jesus today.
- People who loved Jesus and died will wake up, and we will all go home together — with no more tears!
Fun activity: Draw a big sky. In one corner, draw a tiny dark cloud. Then draw it again bigger and brighter, and finally a great white cloud with a rainbow on top (Revelation 1:7). Write across the sky: "Jesus is coming back for ME!" Then make a "Welcome home" paper chain with a grown-up: on each link, write one thing you'll be happy about in heaven — like hugging someone you miss, or no more crying (Revelation 21:4).
Think about it: What is the first thing you want to say to Jesus when you see Him?
For parents & teachers
- Make clear that Maya and her grandpa are make-believe, but every Bible verse is real — open the Bible and read them together.
- Keep it joyful and gentle: no scary pictures of the end. Focus on Jesus keeping His promise, taking us home, and no more tears (John 14:3; Revelation 21:4).
- Never set dates or connect Jesus' coming to today's news. Jesus said no one knows the day or hour (Matthew 24:36).
- Explain that His coming is not secret: every eye will see Him, with a shout and a trumpet (Revelation 1:7; 1 Thessalonians 4:16).
- If a child has lost someone, share gently that Jesus called death a sleep (John 11:11-14) and that the dead in Christ rise first. "Comfort one another with these words" (1 Thessalonians 4:18).
- Teach that we are ready by trusting Jesus, not by being perfect — salvation is His gift (Hebrews 9:28).
- If your child seems very fearful or anxious about the end of the world, listen calmly, reassure them, and talk with a pastor and a qualified professional. In the US, call or text 988, or 911 in an emergency. Our words are spiritual encouragement, not professional help.
- End with a short prayer: "Thank You, Jesus, for Your promise. Help me trust You every day until You come."
