The Special Day God Made for Rest
A present from God that comes back every single week!
Imagine your daddy says: "Every week, you and I will have one whole special day together. We will go on a picnic, look at the clouds, sing, and laugh. Just us!" Wouldn't you jump up and down with joy? Guess what? God made a day exactly like that for YOU. It is called the Sabbath — the seventh day of the week, Saturday — and it is God's happy gift of rest!
A long, long time ago, when God finished making the whole beautiful world — the sun, the sea, the puppies, the people — He did something amazing. He made one more thing: a special day. He rested on it, He blessed it, and He made it holy. It was like the birthday party of the whole world!
God loved this day so much that He asked us to remember it. He said: work and play hard for six days, and then on the seventh day, stop! Put the toys away, put the work away, and come spend the day with Me.
The Sabbath is not a rule to make you sad. It is a gift to make you happy — a whole day with the God who loves you!
When Jesus lived on earth, some people had turned the Sabbath into a heavy list of "don'ts." But Jesus smiled and told them the truth: God made this day FOR us, like a present with our name on it.
What can we do on the Sabbath? So many happy things! We can sing with our family, hear Bible stories, go to church, take a walk and count the birds and flowers, visit someone who is lonely, and cuddle up close to Jesus. God says that when we call the Sabbath a delight — that means a joy — He fills our hearts with happiness.
And here is the best part. The Sabbath is a hug from Jesus. When we are tired, He says: come to Me, and I will give you rest. Every Sabbath is like sitting on His lap and hearing Him say, "I made this day for you, because I love you."
The Bible even tells us that this beautiful rest is still for God's children today — it never got old!
In her book The Desire of Ages, Ellen G. White points us to Jesus, who made the Sabbath at creation and invites tired hearts to find true rest in Him. What a kind Savior we have!

Fun activity: Make a "Sabbath treasure box"! Decorate a shoebox and fill it with quiet-day treasures: a Bible storybook, crayons, nature cards. Open it only on Sabbath — that makes the day extra special. Then go outside and find 3 things God made and thank Him for them!
For parents & teachers
- Read the story aloud with joy and big smiles — warmth matters as much as the words.
- Pause at each picture (the picnic with Daddy, the world's birthday party, the present with your name) and ask the child how it makes them feel.
- Present the Sabbath as a delight, never a list of "don'ts" — plan happy Sabbath traditions (special breakfast, candles, nature walks, songs).
- Tie each truth back to a real Bible verse; open the Bible together.
- Pray a short thank-you prayer with the child at the end.
- Let the child help prepare on Friday (tidy toys, set out clothes) so the Sabbath feels like getting ready for a party.
